Notes - John Barlow Sr migrated to New England during the Puritan Great Migration (1620-1640).
Disputed Parents and Wife
It has been suggested that John Barlow was the son of Alexander Barlow and Elisabeth Brereton. This appears to be groundless, and it contradicts a coat of arms granted to a descendant in the 19th century. ""John Barlow's parents are not known from the records.
John Barlow is listed as a child of Alexander Barlow in the funeral certificate of the latter. The printed book lists some sources. One of these is the History of Chorlton Chapel, which clearly states that John died in "Spayne," so would not have been the immigrant to New England.
John Barlow's wife was named Ann. It has been claimed that she was Ann Ward, but there is no known evidence to support this.
Biography
According to genealogical tradition John Barlow was born in Barlow, Chorlton, Lancastershire, England in about 1594. In his book, Daniels says he can find no evidence for this connection. John married Ann (or Anna) in England before 1630. They settled in Fairfield, where he owned land at least as early as 1650. His will was made 28 Mar. 1674, naming his wife Ann, son John, daughters, Elizabeth Frost, Martha Beers, Deborah Sturges, Isabella Clapham and Ruth Bradley. Inventory was done 9 June 1674.
John was an early settler of Fairfield, Conn. In 1639. He owned the lot next, southwest of Roger Ludlow, on Ludlow Square. He sold this place to Thomas Morehouse before 1653, and then settled on the beautiful plain, running northwest of Ludlow Square and Concord Field. The place of his house was known as Barlow's Plain. His will dated Mar 28 1674, and he left a large estate.
